Hadiths about Mercy (رحمة) in Islam

=============================

Hadith # 1

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah made mercy into one hundred parts. He retained with Him ninety-nine parts and sent down to earth one part. Because of this one part, creatures show mercy towards each other, so much so that an animal lifts its hoof away from its youngster lest it should hurt it."

Another narration reads: "Allah, the Almighty, has one hundred mercies, of which He sent down one mercy among mankind, jinn, animals, and vermin. It is by this mercy that they show compassion towards each other and are merciful to each other; and it is by this mercy that the beast is affectionate towards its offspring. Allah, the Almighty, deferred ninety-nine mercies with which He will bestow mercy on His slaves on the Day of Judgment."

Salmān Al-Fārisi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Almighty, has one hundred mercies, out of which one mercy is used by His creatures to be merciful towards one another, while the ninety-nine mercies are kept for the Day of Judgment."

Another narration reads: "Allah, the Almighty, created one hundred mercies on the Day He created the heavens and the earth. Each mercy can fill what is between the heavens and the earth. He placed one (mercy) on earth, and it is with it that a mother has compassion for her child and animals and birds have compassion for one another. On the Day of Judgment, He will complete them (the ninety-nine mercies) with that mercy."

[Authentic hadith]- [Narrated by Muslim - Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim]

Hadith # 2

Wā’il ibn Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I prayed with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), and he used to make Taslīm (salutation of peace ending the prayer) to his right saying: "May Allah's peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you," and to his left saying: "May Allah's peace and mercy be upon you."

[Good hadith]- [Narrated by Abu Daoud]-[Sunan Abu Daoud - 997]

When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to end his prayer, he would make Taslīm to his right and left by turning his face to the right along with saying: (May Allah's peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you), and then make Taslīm to his left by turning his face to the left along with saying: (May Allah's peace and mercy be upon you).

<![if !supportLists]>1.    <![endif]>The legitimacy of the two Taslīms in prayer and the fact that they are from its pillars.

<![if !supportLists]>2.   <![endif]>It is recommended to add: (and blessings) sometimes because the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not say it on a regular basis.

<![if !supportLists]>3.   <![endif]>Pronouncing the two Taslīms in prayer is an obligatory pillar; however, the act of turning while pronouncing Taslīm is recommended.

<![if !supportLists]>4.   <![endif]>Saying: (May Allah's peace and mercy be upon you) must be during the act of turning not before or after it.

Hadith # 3

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''May Allah have mercy upon a man who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens his wife. If she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. May Allah have mercy upon a woman who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens her husband. If he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face.''

[Good hadith]- [Narrated by Ibn Majah - An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by Ahmad]

Hadith # 4

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah created Adam (peace be upon him), He said to him: 'Go and greet those – a group of angels who were sitting – and listen to what they are going to say in response to your greeting as that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring.' He (Adam) said: 'As-Salāmu ‘alaykum (peace be upon you).' They replied: 'As-Salāmualayk wa rahmatullāh (Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you),' thus adding 'wa-rahmatullāh (and mercy of Allah)' in their response to his greeting."

[Authentic hadith]- [Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim]

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ten." Then another came and said: As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāh (may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon you). Hadith # 6

???? Explanation of the Hadith

Ibn Abbas reports that the Prophet said:

“Indeed, the Rahim (kinship ties) is a bond clinging to the waist of the Most Merciful. Whoever maintains it, Allah will maintain ties with him; and whoever severs it, Allah will sever ties with him.”

1. The meaning of “Rahim” (الرَّحِم)

  • Literally, rahim means womb, but in the usage of the Qur’an and Sunnah, it refers to the bonds of kinship and family ties that come from the womb.
  • This emphasizes that blood relations are sacred and tied to the Name of Allah, Ar-Rahman.

2. The meaning of “Shijnah” (شِجْنَة)

  • Scholars said it means: a strong intertwined connection, like the roots and branches of a tree.
  • This shows kinship is not something light or optional — it is deeply rooted and binding.

3. The meaning of “Hujzah” (حُجْزَة)

  • ujzah is the area of the waist where a belt or garment is fastened.
  • The hadith uses this imagery to show that kinship ties are attached in a noble and honored position with Allah, so whoever honors them is honored by Allah, and whoever cuts them off is distanced from Allah.
  • This is not a physical attachment — rather it is a metaphor that expresses the great closeness and importance of family ties in the sight of Allah.

4. The lesson

  • Maintaining kinship (silat ar-rahim) is not just a social duty — it is an act that brings Allah’s mercy and support.
  • Cutting off kinship ties is not just bad manners — it is a sin that severs a person from Allah’s mercy.

Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) said in Fath al-Bari:

“The meaning is that Allah elevates the status of kinship ties, so that whoever maintains them will receive Allah’s favor and connection, and whoever cuts them will be deprived of it.”

In summary: This hadith shows that kinship ties are sacred, directly connected to Allah’s Name Ar-Rahman, and that maintaining or breaking them affects one’s relationship with Allah Himself.

Hadith # 32

Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“O ‘Ā’ishah, be gentle, for gentleness is never in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is never removed from anything except that it disgraces it.”
[Authentic hadith] – [Narrated by Muslim]

Hadith # 33

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Whoever relieves a believer of a worldly distress, Allah will relieve him of a distress on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever makes things easy for one in difficulty, Allah will make things easy for him in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever conceals a Muslim’s faults, Allah will conceal his faults in this world and the Hereafter. Allah helps His slave as long as the slave helps his brother.”
[Authentic hadith] – [Narrated by Muslim]

Hadith # 34

Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
A group of polytheists, who went to excess in killing and committing illegal sexual intercourse, came to Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "What you say and invite people to is indeed good. If only you could tell us whether there is an expiation for what we did. Thereupon, it was revealed: {and those who do not invoke besides Allah, another god, and who do not kill a soul whom Allah has forbidden, except in the course of justice, and who do not commit adultery}[Surat al-Furqān: 68].

And the following verse was revealed: {Say[Allah says]: "O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah's mercy."} [Surat az-Zumar: 53]

[Authentic hadith]- [Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim]-[Sahih Bukhari - 4810]

Hadith # 35

Awf ibn Mālik al-Ashja‘i (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I stood in prayer one night with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). He stood up and recited Sūrat al-Baqarah. Whenever he came across a verse mentioning mercy, he stopped and asked (Allah for mercy); and whenever he came across a verse mentioning punishment, he stopped and sought refuge (with Allah from it). Then he bowed and paused as long as he stood, and said while bowing: "Glory be to the Possessor of greatness, dominion, grandeur, and majesty." Then he prostrated himself and paused as long as he stood and said while prostrating the same thing he said while bowing. He then stood up and recited Sūrat Āl-‘Imrān, and then recited other Sūrahs, one after another.

[Authentic hadith]- [An-Nasaa’i - Narrated by Abu Daoud - Narrated by Ahmad]

Hadith # 36

On the authority of Umm Al-Ala’, she said: “Uthman ibn Maz’un fell ill while we were living in our home, when the Ansar were drawing lots for the residence of the Muhajirun. He fell ill, so we nursed him until he died, then we put him in his clothes. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came in to us, and I said: ‘May Allah have mercy on you, Abu Al-Sa’ib. I bear witness that Allah has honored you.’ He said: ‘How do you know?’ I said: ‘I do not know, by Allah.’ He said: ‘As for him, certainty has come to him. I hope good for him from Allah, but by Allah, I do not know - and I am the Messenger of Allah - what will be done with me or with you.’” Umm Al-Ala’ said: “By Allah, I do not vouch for anyone after him.” She said: “I saw in a dream a flowing spring for Uthman, so I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned that to him. He said: ‘That is his work flowing for him.’” [Sahih] - [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]

Hadith # 37

Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali al-Adami informed us in Mecca, on the authority of Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, on the authority of Abd al-Razzaq, on the authority of Ma'mar, on the authority of Qatadah, on the authority of Qasamah ibn Zuhayr, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority of the Prophet, (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) who said, "When a believer is dying, the angels of mercy come to him with white silk and say, 'Come out, pleased and well-pleased with you, to the [final] destination." The Spirit of God and basil and a Lord who is not angry. Then it comes forth like the most pleasant scent of musk, so that they pass it on to one another to smell it, until they bring it to the gate of heaven and say, “How pleasant is this wind that has come to you from the earth?” So whenever they come to a heaven, they say that until they bring with them the souls of the believers. He said, “They are happier with it than one of you is with his absent one when he comes to him.” He said, “They ask him, ‘What happened to so-and-so?’ They say, ‘Leave him until he rests, for he was in the grief of this world.’ Then when he says to them, ‘Did he not come to you?’ For he has died. He said, “They will say, ‘He was taken to his mother, the Abyss.’” He said, “As for the disbeliever, the angels of punishment will come to him and say, ‘Come out, angry and wrathful, to the punishment and wrath of Allah.’ So he will come out like the stench of a corpse. They will take him to the gate of the earth and they will say, ‘What is this stench?’ Every time they come to him, The earth. They said, "That is until they bring with it the souls of the disbelievers." Hisham ibn Abdullah al-Dastawa'i followed Ma'mar ibn Rashid in his narration on the authority of Qatadah on the authority of Qasamah ibn Zuhayr. [Sahih] - [Narrated by al-Nasa'i]

Hadith # 38

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will gather mankind (on the Day of Resurrection). The believers will stand until Paradise is brought near to them. So, they will go to Adam (peace be upon him) and say: 'O our Father, request that Paradise be opened for us.' He will say: 'Was it anything other than your father's sin that got you out of Paradise? I am not fit for that. Go to my son Ibrahīm, the intimate friend of Allah.' They will go to Ibrahīm who will say: 'I am not fit for that. Indeed, I was only an intimate friend of a low order. Go to Mūsa whom Allah spoke directly to.' They will go to Mūsa, but he will say: 'I am not fit for that. Go to ‘Īsa, the Word and Spirit of Allah.' ‘Īsa will say: 'I am not fit for that.' So they will go to Muhammad who will stand and will be given permission. Trust and kinship will be sent to stand on the right and left of the Sirāt. The first of you will pass over it like lightning." I (the narrator) said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! What is the passing of lightening like?" He said: "Have you not seen how it comes and goes in the blink of an eye? Then it will be like the passing of wind. Then it will be like the passing of birds. Then it will be like the running of men; their deeds will make them run. Your Prophet will be standing at the Sirāt saying: 'O Lord, give salvation, give salvation!' until the deeds of slaves will not avail them; until a man would not be able to move except by crawling. On the two edges of the Sirāt, there will be suspended hooks, commanded to snatch whom they are ordered to snatch. Some people will sustain injuries but will be saved; others will be dumped in the Fire." By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Abu Hurayrah, the depth of Hell is seventy years.

[Authentic hadith]- [Narrated by Muslim]

Hadith # 39

Abu Idrīs al-Khawlāni (may Allah have mercy upon him) reported: I once entered the Damascus mosque. I saw a young man who had shining teeth, and people were with him. When they differed over anything, they would refer it to him and would adopt his opinion. I asked who he was and I was told that he was Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). On the next day, I went early to the mosque, but found that he had arrived earlier than me and was praying. I waited until he completed his prayer, and then went to him from the front, greeted him and said: "By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah." He asked: "By Allah?" I replied: "Yes, by Allah." He then asked me again: "By Allah?" I replied: "Yes, by Allah." Then he took hold of the waist edge of my cloak, drew me close to himself and said: "Rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'Allah, the Almighty, said: ‘My love is certainly due to those who love one another for My sake, sit with one another for My sake, visit one another for My sake, cooperate and give one another for My sake.''"

[Authentic hadith]- [Narrated by Ahmad - Maalik]
